Installation view of "BUILT DRAWINGS" at the Art Academy of Cincinnati.
october 16 - november 15, 2009
"......The twenty six works selected in 'built drawings' are from the last three years. In these works, I've continued my investigation of architecture and landscape as spaces of narrative uncertainty. The imagined structures and landscapes that I create serve as settings within which numerous open ended narratives can find an uncertain footing. The scale and the reality that is inferred by the presence of recognizable architectural elements such as stairs, ladders, or windows give my works a specificity that implies the presence of unseen inhabitants. This inference of presence is an invitation to enter and participate in the imagined environments in each piece. The work springs from an abiding interest in architecture and design, and how these disciplines act as repositories and representations of aspirations, motivations, needs and necessities. Representations of landscape and architecture can reveal ways in which the places that we inhabit are imagined, both literally and figuratively. In my exploration of these themes, I shift from larger sculptural work, with interactive and playful qualities, to painting, drawing, and printmaking. With each shift in media and technique the modes of working become analogous; each informing the other. Each of these pieces delves into the interplay between images of constructed space, absence, and imagined narrative........"
